Hand Knitting Patterns for collectible and baby dolls

A message from our designer

Dolly Knits hand knitting designs are created for the hand knitter who enjoys all the aspects of this creative craft. The costumes for the Collector's dolls have all been inspired by authentic garments or portraits from the actual period and so far as possible within the limitations of the medium, re-create those garments faithfully. The Baby doll designs whilst being pretty and fun, reflect the needs of premature babies for front fastening garments, easy openings for dressing and hats to keep them warm.

All the Heirloom designs are worked with double knitting yarn, although on a smaller needle to keep the finished outfit in scale to the size of the doll. The baby doll designs are worked in a novel way, in that the sizes are altered by changing needle size. Again this keeps the scale correct and also makes the knitting instructions simpler to follow.

Dolly Knits is dedicated to the hand knitter and there is no crochet used in any of our designs. Great care has been taken in the construction of the garments and although this involves a few unusual knitting techniques, they offer a real creative challenge. Most of the garments are knitted in one piece resulting in the minimum of sewing to complete the outfit and a smooth, well fitting outline.

I once visited an exhibition of American log cabin quilts which had been lovingly created by the early settlers. One particularly pretty quilt, made from pieces cut from out-grown garments each with it's particular memory of childhood but put together with great skill, had with it a note..........

"No one will ever see the hours I spent cooking, cleaning and washing although you could cross America with the number of potatoes I've peeled..... so I give just a few moments of my time each day to create my Quilt so that a little bit of me may last forever".
